Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, COP27 President, held today, November 11, 2022, an extensive meeting with the delegation of the U.S. House of Representatives, headed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and members of the accompanying delegation, which comprised a number of chairmen of various committees and members of the House of Representatives.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that, during the meeting, Minister Shoukry was keen to emphasize the strategic nature of relations between Egypt and the United States, and the distinguished cooperation that brings them together in various fields, thus to achieve both countries’ mutual interests. On her part, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives affirmed the interest that the United States attaches to its extended relationship with Egypt and the joint cooperation and coordination binding them in the framework of bolstering regional security and achieving stability, prosperity and development.
The Spokesperson added that the members of the U.S. delegation were keen to get acquainted with the Egyptian position regarding several issues, mainly climate change issues, including providing climate finance, addressing loss and damage, protecting the most vulnerable communities, and preserving seas and coasts.
In this context, Shoukry affirmed the keenness of the Egyptian COP27 presidency to listen to the views of the various parties regarding the themes raised on the conference’s agenda, and converging views, explaining his keenness to achieve a balance between desired ambitions and aspirations, and the current global context and the challenges it poses, in order to reach feasible outcomes that would enhance climate action in all its aspects.
Ambassador Abu Zeid concluded his remarks by noting that the meeting included a lengthy discussion on water issues and the Renaissance Dam file, during which the Foreign Minister outlined the various efforts of the Egyptian state in the field of preserving its water resources, and reiterated the Egyptian stance calling for reaching a binding legal agreement on the rules of the Dam’s filling and operation that would preserve the interests of the three countries, Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan, stressing the necessity for the Ethiopian side to have genuine political will to reach the required agreement.
