Foreign Minister Shoukry Speaks with The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry sat down with The Washington Post’s Karen DeYoung for an interview at Egypt’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. The conversation was part of Minister Shoukry’s three-day diplomatic trip to the United States, where he’s also meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry, National Security Advisor Susan Rice, members of Congress and leading policy experts.
Minister Shoukry discussed the latest regional developments with The Washington Post, including Libya and Syria. In regards to Libya, Minister Shoukry said “the Libyan people should undertake the decisions related to the fight against terrorism and how it should be conducted and what form of assistance should be provided to it. This should be a Libyan-led process defined by the Libyan people.” On the ongoing conflict in Syria, Minister Shoukry added “we have to work in unison” to promote a political settlement of the war there.
Minister Shoukry also sat down with The Wall Street Journal, which wrote ” On the Iran nuclear agreement and aim for a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East, Minister Shoukry said “If the result of the deal is to guarantee that Iran doesn’t become a nuclear weapons state, then it makes it more viable that the zone will be created.”
