President El Sisi Unveils “Egypt Vision 2030” Sustainable Development Strategy

On Wednesday 24 February, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi outlined Egypt’s progressive sustainable development strategy, “Egypt’s Vision 2030.” The strategy aims to achieve a comprehensive set of goals to place Egypt among the world’s top 30 countries in areas of economic and social development. In addition to developing critical infrastructure, such as the 5,000 kilometer national road network currently under construction and the 133 bridges scheduled for completion within 20 months, the 2030 vision calls for bolstering small and medium-sized enterprises, developing of water resources, strengthening rule of law, and improving overall life quality indicators.

Commenting on Egypt’s current affairs, President El Sisi underlined that the state respects the constitution and diligently seeks to implement its articles. President El Sisi also commended the new energy that has been injected into Egypt’s parliamentary life, especially given that the House of Representatives has the largest representation of women, youth and Christians in Egypt’s parliamentary history. Finally, President El Sisi underlined the necessity to uphold rule of the law, stressing that combating terrorism shall not justify any violations and that any violation will be severely penalized.

President El Sisi Launches “Egypt’s Vision 2030”

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi launched on Wednesday Egypt’s sustainable development strategy, “Egypt’s vision 2030”. The strategy aims at placing Egypt among the world’s top 30 countries in terms of economic and social development, combating corruption, life quality indicators and raising growth rates to 10% annually, while taking into consideration political, economic and environmental aspects. These goals are in line with the imperatives of human rights and rule of law, as well as maintaining a robust and balanced foreign policy.

In his remarks, President El Sisi outlined the state’s efforts to develop the necessary infrastructure in order to provide proper services to citizens and create an environment conducive to business and investment. The president referred to the 5,000 km national road network currently under construction, and to the 133 bridges scheduled for completion within 20 months. This is in addition to improving a 600 km of runways and roads inside airports. The president also pointed out the state’s success in addressing its power shortage problem within just one year at a cost of 150 billion pounds, noting that the new electric power, which will be added to Egypt’s national grid by the end of 2017, will amount to half of the country’s total generating capacity, along its history.

President El Sisi noted that 10.5 million cubic meters of water is treated daily, out of which 8 million by dual treatment and 2.5 million by trilateral treatment. Currently, trilateral treatment plants are constructed and dual treatment plants are transformed into trilateral system to obtain pure water that compensates water shortage during the filling period of the renaissance dam, which will be agreed upon with Ethiopia. Egypt also continues efforts to desalinate 500, 000 cubic meters of water per day.

President El Sisi emphasized the importance of funding small and medium-sized enterprises as well as investment sectors. He noted that Egypt adopts a successful foreign policy that has restored Egypt’s regional and international positions, and clarified the reality of events that unfolded in Egypt in the past few years, at the will of the Egyptian people. The president cited Egypt’s balanced foreign relations with all countries in Africa, Asia and Europe and its strategic relations with the US.

Domestically, the president underlined that the state respects the constitution and diligently seeks to implement its articles, commending the transparency with which parliamentary elections were held. The president commended the fresh blood injected into parliamentary life, given that the “House of Representatives” sees the largest representation of women and youth.

President El Sisi underlined the necessity to uphold rule of the law, stressing that combating terrorism shall not justify any violations. The president noted that he had previously pardoned 4 batches of those who were arrested without being convicted. He called on new members of parliament, especially the youth, to visit Egyptian prisons and recommend new names to be released.

The president noted that any mistake committed by a segment of any state institution should not represent by itself the overall performance of the institution. He affirmed that the Egyptian state respects and implements the law and does not interfere in its rulings, stressing that any violation will be severely penalized.

The president congratulated the Egyptian people for the accomplishments they have made within a year and a half, which exceed what had been accomplished in 20 years. He stressed the importance of having hope and optimism for a better future.
