Egyptian Minister of Antiquities visit to Washington DC

Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs Anne Patterson and Assistant Secretary for Education and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan met today with the Egyptian Minister of Antiquities, H.E. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Ali, Egyptian Ambassador Mohamed Tawfik, and members of the Minister’s delegation to discuss areas of cooperation between the U.S. and Egypt in a variety of fields, including cultural preservation and conservation of antiquities, as well as revisiting the travel alerts to Egypt. They also discussed the cooperation in combating the looting and illegal trafficking of Egyptian artifacts.

 

They further addressed joint efforts to support the Ministry of Antiquities, including the rehabilitation and restoration of the Islamic Museum in Cairo and its items, in particular projects funded through the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation. The Minister raised the possibility of cooperation in the fields of security and monitoring of sites as well as capacity building.
